Regional Director: Steve Tuttle
There are vibrant International Student Ministries at The University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University , University of Delaware , and Johns Hopkins University . A staff team of 5 paid staff and several volunteers lead this ministry. In addition one of our staff is the director of an International Student Residence in Philadelphia .
International Student Ministry in the MidAtlantic Region is about reaching out to International students in a variety of ways in hospitality. Our goal is to build witnessing groups of International students who help other students to know and follow Jesus as Savior and Lord. Bible studies for International Students, wives of visiting scholars and English classes are important part of this hospitality.
There is also an opportunity for Muslim and Christian students to meet regularly in, “Meetings for Better Understanding.”
A host family ministry is practiced in conjunction with the ministry at all of the campuses where we currently have staff. This will include hosting International Students during holidays, as well as inviting them to day and overnight learning experience.
University of Delaware
The International Ministry at the University of Delaware , while small in number, about 50 active students, is a multi-faceted ministry involving many of the Christian organizations engaging the campus with the Gospel. InterGrad as the chapter name implies is a mix of primarily International & Graduate students who form the nucleus of the International Student ministry. We conduct worshipful large group meetings once a week and several small group meetings that focus on the application of the scriptures in the lives of the students. While the small group meetings are primarily conducted in English, we currently have a Japanese language small group, a Chinese language small group, and are attempting to grow one in Spanish. In the past, we have had small groups conducted by Indonesians, Koreans, and Spanish.
While the majority of the International students at the University of Delaware are Asian, we do have participation by other world people groups as well. The ministry is mixed in other ways as well. We have participation by the Undergraduate IV groups (about 50 students) in a Language Partner program with the University English Language program for Internationals. The Language Partner program is a university service project that leads easily into personal evangelism. We also have a strong host family program in providing American Christian families to befriend International Students especially on holidays. In addition, to further attract non-Christians, we offer informal language training and various weekend and holiday trips to regional attractions.
Opportunities in the MidAtlantic Region
One of the largest student populations in our region is in the Metro Washington, DC area. The University of Maryland , George Washington and Georgetown Universities , and George Mason University are all in the area and have 100’s of International students. As well there is a significant immigrant population in Northern Virginia .
We would like to place 1 to 3 staff to work with International students on campuses in the Metro DC Area.
Great Lakes East Region
Regional Director: Fred Bailey- FSBailey@aol.com
Grand Rapids , MI - Staff member Anne Mallekoote leads and coordinates weekly Bible discussions, soccer games and social-cultural events at several colleges and city-wide.
Kalamazoo , MI - a weekly luncheon and informal discussion is attended by 175 international students. We really need a new staff person to help coordinate and train international student Bible study leaders and whole group leaders.
Michigan State University , Lansing , MI - New staff couple Brian and Tammy Williams are finding great openness among Internationals and opportunities for partnership with university administrators at this Big Ten campus as they share the practical and eternal love of God with many students.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI - We have begun a deeper partnership with a local church that has been fruitfully active for many years in International student ministry; we are looking for an experienced ISM worker or couple who would have a joint appointment with InterVarsity and the local church to reach and serve the 1000's of I-students within walking distance at this Big Ten campus.
Wayne State University , Detroit , MI - Exciting work with Chinese scholars, Arabs and Indians is limited by the lack of workers. We need a staff worker to focus on these needy and open groups.
Cleveland , Ohio - Extensive ISM at a number of campuses is being coordinated by ISM staff Bok and Heidi Chew and a cadre of volunteers.
West Virginia University , Morgantown , WV - Explosive growth in I-student relationships and witness has developed through students who had participated in InterVarsity Global Projects. We are looking for a staff worker to help coordinate and expand ISM at West Virginia 's premier public university.
Penn State U, The Behrend College , Erie , PA - This fledging International student work with great potential needs a full or part-time worker to develop the work citywide.
Blue Ridge Region

ISM Area Director: Katie Rawson- firstname.lastname@example.org
There are over 20,000 international students on campuses in Virginia and the Carolinas , and our region has a four-person area team devoted entirely to international student ministry. A multicultural student-led fellowship at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the International Bible Study, has been reaching international students for over twenty years. At Virginia Tech ( Blacksburg ), there is both a small International Bible Study and a growing Indian Christian Fellowship. Each March international student leaders from both groups have a chance to use their gifts during an evangelistic Discovery Weekend featuring an international speaker. The fellowships at both universities are blessed by the participation of volunteers, including faculty members, and by partnerships with local churches.
We are currently seeking to expand our staff team in order to establish international fellowships at additional universities. Three of the campuses for which we are praying are UNC-Charlotte, Old Dominion University ( Norfolk , VA ) and the University of Virginia ( Charlottesville ). We are looking for full time staff members as well as volunteers who take secular jobs and offer twenty hours a week for ministry. For more information about student activities and staff opportunities, email Katie Rawson, area director, at email@example.com.

ISM in Kentucky
The International Christian Fellowship at UK celebrates ten years this year. ICF membership includes about seventy international students representing dozens of countries from out of the 2000 internationals at UK . These students are regularly involved in our large group meeting, or one of our four Small Group Bible Studies and prayer meetings throughout the week. About 25% of the students involved are not Christians yet but will be one day. Our Friday evening service consists of a free meal for the students and a full student led worship service with a speaker. Throughout the year we do outreach and evangelism on campus, take students to conferences and to at least one fun adventure a year--this time our adventure was to Cedar Point amusement park in northern Ohio . At the University of Louisville, our ISM chapter hosts about 25 students from China, India, Japan, Ethiopia, Germany, Poland, Ghana, and Eritrea (only about 5 are Christians) on Friday evenings for dinner and Bible study. The U of Louisville has over 800 Internationals who tend to be in Graduate programs, many in the Medical school and Engineering school. There are three small group Bible Studies, two are for catered to students who never have read the Bible before-- but all three include not-yet Christians. The student leadership team and staff have Great partnership with the International center with whom we cosponsor events like a huge yard sale in August, and a Thanksgiving dinner open and advertised to all Internationals on campus and attended by over 100!
At Murray State University , we recently pioneered an ISM chapter which now is meeting and reaching out to internationals on that campus. The ISM InterVarsity staff team consists of three part-time and one full time paid staff and several volunteers who give up to 30 hours a week. The opportunity for additional ISM staff to join this team is great. New Staff could join established ISM workers on team in a city to reach out to Internationals. Additional staff could add to the evangelism and discipling relationships resulting in more Internationals influenced to follow Christ in Kentucky . Please contact Eric Petersen- email@example.com.
South Florida Staff Opportunities
To get the landscape of South Florida , picture 100 miles of freeways and turnpikes from Palm Beach to Miami , one suburb bleeding into the next. If you were to drive its length, most days you would see blue skies and feel a warm ocean breeze, and you could wave at more than 20 campuses of significant size, plus numerous smaller ones. If you stopped and walked around most any of these campuses, you would hear many different languages and see a reflection of the multicultural society of which the university is a part. If you investigated, you’d find several small campus ministries, including InterVarsity on some of the campuses. You would wonder why the ministries aren’t larger or on every campus, but in talking to staff you’d find that God is doing significant work among students – natives, immigrants and international students alike - in this metropolitan area. If you researched further, you’d find the following amazing statistics:
· FLORIDA ’S IS population is almost 30,000 and continues to rank 5th in the nation.
· FIVE Florida universities, 3 of which are in S FL , have more than 1,000 international students.
· FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY in Miami has 3,741 IS, with a total student population of 33,800 and ranks #1 in the nation among doctoral granting institutions.
· MIAMI DADE COLLEGE with 87,456 students, ranks 6th in the nation among community colleges for its IS population of 2,000. MDC Kendall campus has 59,000 students, 66% of whom are Hispanic.
· TOP SENDING countries are: India , Colombia , China , Venezuela and Jamaica .
· S. FL Language-specific churches include Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Creole, Spanish and Romanian.
With facts like these, there should be numerous ISM staff partnering to reach the nations here, but at present there is only one part-time IV ISM staff and a couple of IS workers from other ministries. Whether to the community college, the 4-year residential campus, or to grad students, maybe God would call you to serve on our team to pioneer a historically decisive work here. Please contact Darlene Jackson, S. FL area Team Leader, or Brian Sanders, Florida Divisional Director for more information on staff opportunities in this area. firstname.lastname@example.org / email@example.com.
Great Lakes West Region
Regional Director: Sandy Beelen – firstname.lastname@example.org
Great Lakes West has a long history of ISM ministry with significant ISM Ministry at Tri-State University (FT Wayne area ministry) in Indiana , Indiana State College , University of Wisconsin at Madison , University of Illinois and in Chicago .
We have several openings for ISM staff, but the larger need is for an ISM Regional Coordinator for the Great Lakes West region.
North Central Region
Regional Director: Rick Mattson- email@example.com
At South Dakota State in Brookings , SD , we have appointed ISM volunteers who hold a weekly Bible Study and a Friday night get-together. For Thanksgiving, they hosted 23 internationals for a party. Further west, at Northern State in Aberdeen , SD , a small group of internationals meet each week for a Bible study.
In North Dakota , Collette Michal serves as an ISM specialist. She has worked extensively with internationals through hospitality, Bible studies, and parties. She also brought 10-15 internationals to chapter camp last spring, which was an amazing experience.
In Minnesota , we have pockets of internationals involved in InterVarsity at Bemidji , Duluth , St. Cloud , Winona State , Morris, Marshall , and at Macalester College in St. Paul .
Recently in the North Central Region, we have seen a smattering of conversions among internationals at various schools.
ISM Area Director: Craig Colbert- JohnCraigColbert@aol.com
Nearly 25 percent of the 2,000 + IVCF students in the Central Region are international students/scholars. There are three international student staff in region with a vision for an ISM staff team of 10 in the next five years. There are over 40,000 international students, scholars and their family members in our region.
Focused ISM ministries exist at the Kansas University-Lawrence and University of Missouri-Columbia campuses with various forms of International Witnessing Communities (IWC's) on seven campuses. We are seeking to integrate ISM into the warp and woof of InterVarsity in our region. We are looking especially for two new ISM staff who are evangelistic, enthusiastic and willing to work as a team in existing ministries.
Red River Region
(or "Southwest Region" on map above)
Regional Director: Brian Wallace- Bwallace@ivstaff.org
The majority of ISM work in the Red River Region has been at The University of Houston, the University of Arkansas and now Rice University . U of H has one of the largest international student enrollments representing more than 100 nations. It is at U of H Jovin Adjeitey helps guide students through issues of identity, beliefs, values and their view of the world through weekly meetings, worship, bible studies, and conferences. Kevin Smith at the University of Arkansas works with a witnessing community of about 20 people predominately Indian and African students. They are actively involved in the Muslim and Hindu community on campus. Their focus is in developing communities that witness (leadership training, small group, discipleship), communities that empower and partner (cultural training and outreach), communities that have Hospitality (practical help with shopping, furniture, rides), and targeted outreach to cultures and religions that are hostile to the US and Christianity. International students make up 15% of total enrollment at Rice University . Roughly 85% of Internationals are graduate students. Mike Karim is pioneering an ISM to meet the needs of the international graduate students.
Although the International student Ministry in the Red River is very young we are excited about it¹s future. We are interested in planting an ISM on the campuses of The University of Texas at Austin , Texas A&M, University of Texas at Arlington and University of North Texas . If you are interested in helping pioneer please contact Brian Wallace at Bwallace@ivstaff.org.
Rocky Mountain Region
Regional Director: Bob Coughlin- firstname.lastname@example.org
The Rocky Mountain Region’s ISM is led by Maria Fernandez in El Paso , TX . ISM hosts three international House Parties at Bear Trap Ranch in Colorado . We have international student involvement in our chapters throughout the region, but no specific work with them other than Maria’s ministry. Our newest pioneering work in Utah has begun with an International influence. We would like to have someone on the Regional team to partner with Maria in furthering the work with ISM.
Regional Director: Kim Porter- email@example.com
Three full-time IV staff carry out a ministry to the 1100 international students at Portland State University . The most visible aspect of the ministry is a weekly Friday Night Coffee House that averages 200 in attendance. Out of this common meeting place spring weekly Bible studies, discipleship groups, a weekly Christian fellowship, English classes, topical classes, conversation partners and wives' gatherings. The ministry is cooperative with staff from Chi Alpha, Southwest Bible Church , Navigators, and Mission to the Americas as well as 70 volunteers from local churches and Christian colleges and seminaries.
The IV ministry at Willamette University reaches out to the Japanese students at Tokyo International University 's branch campus housed at Willamette .
The IV ministry at Oregon State University also has a work among the 1200 internationals enrolled at OSU.
The Northwest Region would like to place international staff workers at Willamette and OSU this next year and at Oregon Washington and Washington State in the next two years. To accomplish these goals we invite interested people to spend a year as international ministry interns at PSU, OSU or Willamette . Contact Regional Director Kim Porter for more information at firstname.lastname@example.org
Regional Director: Jason Jensen- email@example.com
The Pacific Region consists of Northern California , Hawaii , and Reno , Nevada . Many campuses in our region host great numbers of International students, but currently InterVarsity has very few full-time International Student staff in the region. Frank and Shirley Stenzel have a thriving International Student ministry in Chico , CA . Several of our undergraduate and graduate campus fellowships reach out intentionally to Internationals on campus. We would be happy to consider staff candidates for International Student Ministry in any of our areas.
If you are interested, please contact Regional Director Jason Jensen - firstname.lastname@example.org and he will connect you with the Area Director in the place of your interest.
Regional Director: Rich Lamb (interim)- email@example.com
ISM in the Surf and Turf Division:
The International Student Fellowship (IVCF) at Fresno State has been operating separately from the domestic student (IVCF) group for more than 10 years. Each Fall and Spring semester we offer various activities to the new international students during orientation including a very well attended World Welcome Party, a Shopping Shuttle and a trip to Yosemite National Park . These activities provide opportunities for developing relationships between new students, returning students and IV staff. Then we invite them to join our weekly activities and Fellowship meetings.
Currently we have an average of 20 – 25 students attending Friday night meetings, which include free dinner, game, singing and Bible Discussion groups. Christians and many non-believers are learning together what it means to serve and follow Jesus in community. During the week we also provide opportunities for individual Bible Studies, discipleship and community service in a tutoring club for children in a poor urban area of Fresno . It is exciting to see students eager to know more about Jesus and participate in serving each other and those around them. For more information contact Ann at Fehrann@aol.com
Currently, At Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo there is no International Student Ministry staff and yet God is at work among International students. There is a small group bible study going that is full of non-believers. In a separate GIG, there is a French student who is consistently asking questions about Jesus and the Christian faith.
The International students at Cal Poly are very event oriented. Recently the group has road-tripped to Disneyland , had potlucks and they are having a Latin cultural dinner this coming Friday.
For more information about international students at Cal Poly, contact Rob Dixon at firstname.lastname@example.org
ISM in the Greater Los Angeles Division
The Greater Los Angeles Division of IVCF covers several counties in Southern California : Los Angeles , Orange , Riverside , and San Bernardino Counties . This geographic area attracts over 34,000 international students, one of the highest concentrations in the U.S. International student ministry was revived in greater Los Angeles two and a half years ago. Currently, there are separate chapters for international students at UCLA, University of Southern California , UC Irvine, and in the San Gabriel Valley for students at Pasadena City College , East L.A. College , and Cal State L.A. Our focus in these chapters is to develop Christian international students as leaders and to build communities that welcome and serve both Christian and non-Christian students.
We are seeking interns (volunteers who are able to commit to up to 20 hours a week of ministry) and full-time staff who have a passion for student ministry and a desire to be part of a pioneering ministry. Prior campus ministry and cross-cultural ministry experience is helpful. There are opportunities to join a team in all four of these chapters. If you are interested, please contact Yii-Shyun Lin at email@example.com .
